At Upland Consulting, we think that’s what life as a business owner should be. That’s why it’s so important to get really clear about your purpose for being in business.
Sure, you’re in business to make money. But that’s just a means to an end. Why are you really in business?
It matters a lot that we think this through. Your purpose, and therefore your definition of business success, may well shift over the years; but still one of the best things you can do to grow your business is to get clear about your “Why.”
A NSW accounting firm surveyed their clients about this. The commonest business objective was “still be in business next year.” That’s OK, but it’s got a limited service life, would you agree? For how many years is that going to light your fire?
The most common goal we hear from business owners is about lifestyle. Family time, leisure time, travel time, the choice to retire in reasonable comfort. Those are very valid goals. The second most common is about leaving a legacy, having something to hand on. We all want our work to have meant something, don’t we?
These are life reasons. The purpose of our businesses is to sustain our life priorities and goals. To have a life, in short.
At Upland Consulting, we help business leaders define and achieve success. So what would that look like for you?
